Although it’s entirely subjective and arguably irrelevant, I can see with a certain degree of finitude that the Swiftbreaker should not be used as a substitute for a rain jacket. ![]() Thus, I used it on day hikes, trail runs, my bike ride to and from work every day, PLUS a couple of backpacking trips. ![]() Like Owen before me, I just wanted to check real quick whether the Switfbreaker could also be a viable, lightweight alternative to a traditional rain jacket on a hike. But I know folks often look for water resistance in a wind jacket/shell, so I figured I’d give it a go anyway. This jacket isn’t advertised as having any water resistance and doesn’t include DWR coating. I also took it on a couple of backpacking trips to make sure that the shoulders didn’t wear thin too quickly.īut what fun would it be to confine this jacket to such narrow parameters? Better to unnecessarily test its further limits while we’re here. It excels in each of these roles I’ve worn it for a variety of activities over about 30 days, and the fabric shows little sign of wear or degradation, even after a few washes. It’s best for more casual recreation rather than, say, thru-hiking or ultrarunning, but it’s still a reliable piece for most day-use activities. Neither of these jackets are insulated - so they're not going to provide you any warmth. The athleisure-adjacent Swiftbreaker is primarily intended to be an extra layer of warmth and wind protection on day hikes, bike rides, and trail runs. If EVEN the Houdini Air wouldn't cut it for you in the breathability department, then check out Patagonia's Airshed. You can check out my post that compares the Houdini, Houdini Air and the 2019 Squamish to one another. You know, I'm an Arc'teryx fanboy, but in that case, if you don't necessarily HAVE TO get an Arc'teryx for this situation, then even I would recommend you to get the Patagonia's Houdini Air Hoody. If you tend to overheat fairly more than the average person, though then even the Incendo might not cut it for you. These enhancements improved the breathability of the 2019 Incendo quite a bit and ended up putting it ahead of the 2019 Squamish as a result. BTW, if you are a teen looking for a bike to ride with your Incendo, check out the Bikes for Teens article by the Cycle Simply team. This way you don't wish having pit zips so much. In addition to that, unlike the Squamish, Incendo is also equipped with a dope feature which adds to its breathability further (see image). With the revised 2019 model, mesh vents around the arm pits now are not only TWICE as long the previous models, but also almost twice as WIDER. With the 2019 revision, not only did it get considerably less breathable, but Arc'teryx also failed to communicate this change effectively. Squamish was breathable once (models between 2014-2018). ![]() ![]()
